Wise County, VA to Receive Firewise Community Hazard Mitigation Grant to Enhance Safety and Accessibility in Woodland Communities

Wise County, VA GIS Office has been awarded a $10,000 Virginia Department of Forestry Grant to provide address signage for homes in rural and forested areas of the county.

WISE COUNTY, VA – The Wise County Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce an award of $10,000 from the Virginia Department of Forestry’s Firewise Community Hazard Mitigation Grant program, which makes grants to organized communities through the federal funding of the National Fire Plan to help at-risk communities reduce or mitigate potential threats from wildfire. These grant funds will be administered by the Wise County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Office and will facilitate the provision of numerical house address signs to improve navigation and emergency response in the county's remote and wooded areas.

As the designated 911-addressing entity of the county, the Wise County GIS Office understands that navigating rural and wildland forested areas can be challenging for emergency responders, postal services, and residents. In an emergency situation, having clear and visible house address signage is especially crucial for prompt response and assistance. The Firewise Community Hazard Mitigation Grant will enable Wise County to implement a numerical house address sign program to equip properties with proper signage. Specifically, these grant funds will be utilized to purchase house address signs and plaques that comply with local addressing standards. This initiative will enhance the overall safety and well-being of the community.

Wise County's GIS Office will work closely with Wise County Emergency Management, emergency services agencies, local government entities, and community organizations to ensure the successful implementation of the rural addressing initiative. To be eligible for this program, a resident must have an addressable structure that is in a rural or forested area and that is currently without posted numerical address signage. Residents interested in receiving numerical address signage are encouraged to fill out the form linked here or contact the Wise County GIS Office directly by phone at 276-328-7110 or email at bloomer_g@wisecounty.org.
