Opportunities for M.E.C.C. and UVa-Wise Students)
The
Wise County/Norton City Clerk of Circuit Court was awarded
a $66,500 grant to advance the Crime Mapping Program in
cooperation with local law enforcement agencies. College
students majoring in criminal justice at either Mountain
Empire Community College or The University of Virginia's
College at Wise are eligible to apply for research assistant
stipends for multi-semester participation in the program.
Crime Mapping Research Assistants must gain enrollment in
Geographic Information Science (GIS) web-based courses at
MECC and apply their graded skills in a criminal justice
application locally. Contact Clerk of Court Jack Kennedy
for a student research assistant application.
The
NASA-funded DEVELOP Scholars Program is now accepting applications
for a multi-semester college research assistants for the
purpose of applying skills in advanced applied science,
mathematics, and computer science projects. Successful applicants
will be required to take Geographic Information Science
courses through Mountain Empire Community College as well
as advanced research courses through The University of Virginia's
College at Wise for graded credit. A project underway my

assistants may be recommended to NASA for summer internships.

Student
Intern Positions for G.I.S. Development
The
Circuit Court Clerk's
Office accepts University
of Virginia's College at Wise and Mountain
Empire Community College student interns to work on
the Wise County Geographic Information System data development.
College credit may be obtained for working on a research
demonstration project relating to Geographical Information
System (GIS) applications through either UVa's
College at Wise or MECC.
Students should contact Circuit Court Clerk Jack Kennedy
directly about the program.
The Circuit
Court Clerk's Office is partnering with NASA's
Langley Research Center's Digital Earth Virtual Environment
and Learning Outreach Project (DEVELOP) in 2001 and
2002. The goal is to expand the GIS into 3-D visualization
and remote sensing studies of Wise County by Wise County
students.
