Wise County Board of Supervisors met in a Workshop meeting
on Thursday, September 20, 2001, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board
of Supervisors meeting room located in the Wise County courthouse.

RE: WASTE MANAGEMENT
ALTERNATIVES
Marshall
Bailey, a Department of Defense Loaned Executive and Management
Consultant, gave the Board an overview of the County landfill
operations with a power point presentation showing the following
three options for the Board to consider:

Continue
to provide the landfill service with ongoing adjustments
-
Provide
the service by either public or private contractors
-
Closure
of landfill and ship waste outside of the County
Each
Board member voiced their objectives for the landfill operations
and the need to reduce costs.
Regarding
the Landfill Use Fee, Board members voiced their ideals
and desires for this fee.
Mr.
Bailey noted the short fall in collecting the needed revenue
for the landfill use fee. He
stressed the need for proper data regarding costs for operating
the landfill from which the fee schedule for the landfill
use fee could be more fairly determined.
Further
considerations related to disposal of waste at the landfill
were to eliminate the residential and commercial fee; charge
the municipalities a tipping fee; have all county residents
purchase a decal, special trash bags or bag tags; and charge
market rates for construction/demolition debris.
After
further discussion, Administrator Sealover recommended that
he prepare a proposal for the Board to review.
There
being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:00
p.m.
